King Abdullah Financial District
King Abdullah Financial District is set to be one of the most iconic financial destinations to emerge from the Middle East.
The project is envisioned to be a City within a City, growing the economy and providing a business epicentre for both the international and local community.
LDPi have been involved in the initial Concept Masterplan Stage overlooking the illumination of the Public Realm, including strategy for facade and urban landscape. Working with the original masterplan from Danish Architects Henning Larsen, LDPi worked with Atkins in creating an iconic night-time destination for all multinational Retail, Residential, Office and Hospitality sectors.
The narrative was to create an illuminated hierarchy which would visually identify key buildings and infrastructure including the overhead metro line and Grand Mosque. ‘Visual Capping’ was used on the Facades to visually unify the Riyadh skyline, whilst each building was identified with specific lighting techniques based on building material, location and usage.
The landscape lighting was designed with safety for way-finding and passage at the forefront. Light integration was proposed for key landscape features such as pools, furniture and planting to avoid visual ‘clutter’ and to create private ambient spaces for residents and visitors alike.
Encouraging dwell time and social engagement within the night-time environment was the primary focus throughout the Landscape and Public Realm. An adaptable control system was considered for sustainability and a sinuous transition between various districts. Colour and Multimedia were also explored to recognise new technologies and to immerse people in out-of-this-world experiences.
