King Abdul Aziz Road
King Abdul Aziz Road (KAAR) is a multi-billion Riyal investment project set to reclaim and re-strategise the pedestrian route ways in and around the holy city of Makkah. LDPi worked closely with Atkins Global to strategise a lighting masterplan along the five-kilometre stretch of one of the primary pedestrian routes to the Masjid Al Haram.
The main lighting objectives were to reconnect visitors with the city, reinvent the wayfinding between landmarks, and create a progressive destination for future developments. KAAR will be accessible from various transport systems, which will encourage social engagement and provide safe passage to the city during the Hajj period.
With the proximity of the holy site in mind, LDPi developed concepts respectful of the location, demographic and historic importance, with the aim of controlling high footfall through the element of light.
